Dead Kangaroo/I'm Gonna Hold a Koala

Good morning to you all from Adelaide, Australia. Last night, we played at ADE Porch Sessions and had a marvelous time. Porch Records is a quaint little shop that has just about everything a touring musician would want. I bought Quincy Jones’ book on creativity and probably should’ve picked up the Beastie Boys shirt, seeing as how they’re one of my favorite bands.

We’ve had a whirlwind of travel days here. A few days ago, we played in a small beach town called Eltham. The hotel rooms were kitschy and individualized. I was told I got the “Sexy” room. If there’s ever a time when I don’t feel sexy, it’s while I’m on tour. When I was single, I used to wonder how bands like Motley Crue or even Three Dog Night found the time to be absolute savages. They probably weren’t setting up their own drums.

As I continue to maul my way through incredible Australian breakfasts, I’ve got to give it up for the Federal Doma Cafe. They are well versed in all things artisanal (or as I like to say, TIZZ, but that’s for a different day) and the coffee was dynamite. Snob alert: I can’t drink a boiling hot flat white. My friend Adam Popick is so intense about his coffee that he’s not afraid to pour one down the sewer in disgust. He seems liberated. Anyway, the breakfast was an all-timer. It may not look like much but it’s fermented brown rice, avo, halloumi, perfectly scrambled eggs, compote, a boiled ass tomato, and a potato rosti with some house-made tartar. I wanted to punch the sky’s ceiling.

My tour diary album DAYROOM 3 is almost complete and it’ll be the shortest one so far. The next two songs I’m sharing are pretty silly. “Dead Kangaroo” is about how I stumbled upon my first dead kangaroo by accident at our hotel in Merimbula. I decided to do a Tom Waits shanty for that one. The next song is an 80’s synth workout tape called “I’m Gonna Hold A Koala”. I wrote that in advance of going to the Lone Pine Sanctuary in Brisbane and the irony is that I didn’t even get to hold a fucking koala. I did get to pet a kangaroo and that was enough for me. I also got to see some Tasmanian devils and they woke up and ran around for me. It was thrilling. The Dayroom songs are behind the paywall, enjoy!

Sincerely,

Eric
